Floyd Grant: From Dyslexic Jamaican Recruit to First-Class Honours Graduate in the British Army
Staff Sergeant Floyd Grant's journey from Jamaica to a first-class honours degree in the United Kingdom is a powerful testament to the transformative power of determination, mentorship, and institutional support - even in the face of dyslexia.
## From Jamaica to the British Army
Originally from Jamaica, Floyd came to the UK after being recruited into the British Army. The 47-year-old now lives in County Antrim in Northern Ireland. His journey began when he met the late Major Christopher Wordsworth in Jamaica, who recruited him and assisted throughout his application to join the British Army.
"I also remember the immigration officer who, during my visa application process, told me that she was giving me the opportunity to travel to the UK to pursue my dream of becoming a soldier and asked me one thing: please do not let her down," Floyd recalled.
## Navigating Dyslexia in the Military
While serving, Floyd made a difference beyond his military duties. He established Northern Ireland's first Army Multicultural Satellite Network and later organised the first Tri-Service and MOD Allies multicultural event in the Middle East, creating opportunities for personnel and allies to celebrate and learn from each other's cultures.
However, Floyd initially lacked confidence because of the challenges he experienced with dyslexia. Reading, writing, and processing information in academic settings presented significant obstacles. But by embracing the support available through the University of Staffordshire and showing determination to succeed, he improved both his confidence and academic performance.
## A First-Class Achievement
Floyd graduated with a first-class degree in BSc (Hons) Business Management (Top Up), a programme designed specifically for Ministry of Defence personnel to study flexibly alongside their duties. He celebrated alongside hundreds of Armed Forces graduates from the Staffordshire Business School.
"Even now, I sometimes ask myself whether I have truly achieved this or if I am simply dreaming, because it still has not fully sunk in," Floyd said after graduation.
## Mentoring Others
Floyd became a trusted voice within his cohort, helping manage the students' WhatsApp group and supporting classmates throughout the programme. Even after completing his degree, he has continued to mentor another student facing challenges similar to those he encountered at the beginning of his own studies.
His drive to support others extends throughout his career. The multicultural network he established and the events he organized have created lasting opportunities for service members to connect across cultures.
## Keeping His Promise
Graduating holds a special significance for Floyd. "On a personal level, it also means I have kept my promise to Major Wordsworth and the immigration officer that I would not let them down and would always strive to succeed," he said.
"The MoD has consistently provided its personnel with opportunities to grow, develop into effective leaders, and benefit from the time, support and investment dedicated to further training and higher education," he added.
## A Story of Resilience
Floyd's success comes as the University of Staffordshire celebrates a renewed six-year partnership to deliver higher education for the Ministry of Defence. His story demonstrates that with the right support systems in place - and the personal determination to embrace them - dyslexia need not be a barrier to academic excellence, even for someone balancing the demands of military service.
His journey from a young Jamaican recruit navigating a new country and a new language, to a first-class honours graduate and mentor to others, embodies the resilience that defines the dyslexic experience - the ability to turn challenges into stepping stones.
